Health & Safety

When it comes to health and safety, the GMB’s reputation is second to none, with experts at all levels of the organisation. Independent studies have shown that the training support and information provided for all our representatives has significantly decreased accidents and ill health at work.

How do we do this?

GMB representatives are encouraged to work with employers on health and safety issues with a particular focus on working to achieve solutions to the problems.

Whatever health and safety problems you have, the health & safety department can assist you. If we don’t have a specific leaflet or publication on the issue, we will get back to you with information and advice.

You can contact the department by phone on 0121 550 4888 or fax on 0121 550 4272.

Further information on health and safety and useful documents can be found on the GMB national website.

Calling all GMB health and safety representatives!

The course will be:

  • Updating all GMB safety representatives on recent developments in health and safety law and enforcement, including mooted changes to the working time directive which could see attacks on breaks, daily rest and payment for ‘on call’ work.

  • Sharing your experiences and best practice from across the region and hearing from workplace health and safety reps who’ve used their rights to help them organise for safer and healthier workplaces.

  • Looking at how best to protect safety rep’s legal rights. Especially our powers as safety reps to inspect the workplace, investigate accidents, receive information, be consulted on changes to the workplace, and to participate in safety committees under the Brown Book (Safety Representatives and Safety Committees Regulations 1977.
  • Looking at how European law underpins the framework of health and safety protection for workers in the UK.
  • Holding a memorial event remembering workers who have lost their lives because of cost cutting employers.

If you have any questions or queries about this event please see the attachment below.

If you would like help with a workplace health and safety issue or an inspection then don’t hesitate to get in touch.
